Happy #FacultyFriday! Today we get to know Ange-Marie Hancock Alfaro, chair of gender studies and professor of political science and sociology. In describing her expertise, she says, “I study intersectionality, which means I study all the things you’re not supposed to talk about at cocktail parties or Thanksgiving! I study the impact of gender, race, sexuality and other categories on U.S. politics. Since I graduated in 2000, studying U.S. politics has been the ultimate roller coaster ride.” 📷1️⃣: Offering analysis of the 2016 CA Primary election for KCAL9 News 📷2️⃣: A selfie on set early in the morning to comment about on politics another time at KCAL9.

🏀 An interesting job you’ve had: Before I went to graduate school I worked for the NBA in the Player Programs department. I developed my social science chops while conducting the original research to form the WNBA because my first instinct was to survey the top 25 women’s college basketball programs, including USC! Fun fact: In preparing my pitch to start the WNBA, I quoted research by one of my now-USC Dornsife colleagues, Mike Messner! 📷3️⃣: The bookcase in my office including three signed basketballs from my time at the NBA. 📷4️⃣: With colleagues Prof. Jane Junn, me, Prof. Janelle Wong and Prof. Ricardo Ramirez.
.
📚Last book I read: “The Sympathizer” by my colleague Viet Thanh Nguyen (viet_t_nguyen). I don’t museum curate my books, so I started to dog-ear the pages with transcendent writing then gave up when I realized I’d have to dog-ear every page!
.
🌴My favorite thing about LA: Hiking — especially in Griffith Park and Baldwin Hills Scenic Lookout (aka the Culver City stairs). For the last three years one of my friends and I have tried to hike at least once a week, during which time she became one of my best friends. Each time I reach the top and look out, I realize how good life is in LA! 📷5️⃣: My very first time at the Halloween Carnaval in West Hollywood. 📷6️⃣: On a USC Good Neighbors service day at Manual Arts High School, where my husband went to school MANY years ago! We cleaned up the community garden for students with the LA Promise Fund. 📷7️⃣: As a comic book superhero!
