It's #FacultyFriday! Get to know Jill Sohm, assistant professor (teaching) of environmental studies, who answered three questions about herself. Sohm is a trained biological oceanographer, which means she studies the interaction between organisms and the ocean. Specifically, she investigates how different cyanobacteria are distributed in the ocean and the effect that can have on ocean chemistry. She has also done similar work in coastal sediments and in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Today her work focuses on the interests of her students and ranges from water pollution, to coastal erosion and aquaponics. 🌏Hobbies: Like many people I enjoy traveling, camping and hiking with my family. [📸3️⃣ With family in Italy.] Exploring new places and especially seeing all of the hidden gems a region has to offer is really special to me. My husband and I have especially enjoyed discovering waterfalls in the LA area (yes, we have them here!) 📸4️⃣ and now that I have kids 📸5️⃣ I am enjoying introducing them to these places as well. .
📚Last book you read: "The Poisoner’s Handbook" by Deborah Blum. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves science, mystery or forensic crime shows because it details the birth of a new scientific discipline where chemists developed the tools to prove how people were poisoned. It also resonated with me because these scientists worked tirelessly to fight against government policies and activities that were killing people with poisons.
