#TerrierTuesday: Gretchen Geraghty (Questrom’19) was well-known at BU long before she first stepped foot on Comm. Ave. The Albany, NY native is known for her YouTube videos (where she’s GretchenLovesBeauty). What began as a hobby in high school blossomed into a full-blown business for Gretchen. “I meet subscribers on campus every single day who tell me my videos about life at BU were so helpful.” While GretchenLovesBeauty began as a fashion/beauty channel, Gretchen soon found herself sharing personal details. “Generally, I’m a very open person,” she says, “I consider my viewers my best friends. When I film, I pretend I’m talking to my best friends & the people who have been watching for a while appreciate that.” As her viewership grew, so did the negative comments. Dealing with this, says Gretchen, has been one of her key learning lessons: “I’ve learned that I don’t need approval from everyone.” Looking back on her 5 years as a YouTuber, Gretchen says she didn’t truly understand what a time commitment hosting her channel would be – or how rewarding she would find it. This year, Gretchen had to make the difficult decision to quit BU’s lightweight rowing team, a team which  had been the impetus for her decision to come to BU. “I was stretched way too thin & realized that YouTube is what was making me the happiest” she says. “Lucky enough, I love BU still even though I’m not rowing.” Regardless, the Geraghty family is well-represented on bu130rowing, as Gretchen’s twin sister Lucy is still rowing for the Terriers.
For now, Gretchen’s focus is on pursuing her degree to help grow her burgeoning business. What advice does she have for aspiring YouTube stars? “Just start doing it and don’t get discouraged. Do it for the right reasons and don’t worry about the numbers.” Her message for fellow Terriers: “Do what you love, keep doing it, and turn that into a job.”
