I’m sad to hear of the passing of #burlesque legend Tempest Storm. We were always in awe of her. I will never forget the first time I met her at #Glamourcon in the early 90s... I kept the pictures she autographed for me taped inside the door of my strip club locker. In the early 2000s, catherinedlish and I would book her to dance at our shows with us, and in later years, Tempest came to see #StripStripHooray! and #artoftheteese in Vegas where she lived. Tempest gave me and Catherine a compliment we will treasure and giggle about forever! 🌟 I will share a few Tempest stories on my So Close. (Link in highlights)

burlesquehall : “Tempest Storm (b. 29 Feb 1928). Tempest was easily one of the best-known burlesque dancers, entertaining audiences from the late 1940s well into the 21st century. 

Born Annie Banks in Eastman, Georgia, Tempest’s ambition, drive, and tremendous good looks drove her quickly from her rural roots to phenomenal success as a headliner in the 1950s. At the peak of her career, she performed around the country and abroad, worked with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas, and appeared in numerous films by Russ Meyers and Irving Klaw, including alongside Bettie Page in Klaw’s 1955 film “Teaserama”.

Tempest was also notable for her many relationships with famous actors, musicians, and even a US president! In 1959, she married musician Herb Jeffries, despite warnings from her manager and MGM Studios (which was considering her for a movie deal) against the interracial marriage. When she married him anyway, her film and performing contracts were all dropped. 

Despite this setback in her career, Tempest was soon appearing as a headliner again, and continued to perform and make public appearances until shortly before the pandemic. She passed away surrounded by loved ones at the age of 93.
