We have all been placed on this earth with a unique palette of tools, skills, and strengths through which we can construct something unique. The more you tap into your creative abilities, the more fulfilling your world will become. So how can we practice being creative?

You don’t have to be a painter or an illustrator to be an artist in your own right. Art comes in so many forms! Every time you problem solve, you are exercising your creativity. The more often that you ask yourself, “How can I do __ more efficiently”, the more you challenge yourself to expand, and improve on what you may have thought couldn’t get any better. If you’ve ever tried taking a different route to work, attempted to cook a new meal, or challenged yourself to a new workout - you’ve practiced using your creativity.

If you don’t know where to begin - the key is to seek out inspiration. What ideas can you gather from others? In music, one of the most commonly practiced techniques is sampling, where a producer takes an element of another song, and modifies it to create a new composition. Many songwriters also study the chord progressions in old songs to write new music. Trumpeter Louis Armstrong once said, “My hobbie (one of them anyway)…is using a lot of scotch tape to pick out different things during what I read and piece them together and make a little story of my own”

What will you create? What will you build? What will be your legacy? Never doubt your ability to bring something new to your environment. And don’t be afraid to leave whatever you touch just a little bit better than it was when you first found it. This week, let’s create something!
