In 2016, the NASA Ames Research Center in California celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. To mark the occasion, the center launched an exhibit titled Katherine Johnson and the moon landing. The exhibit showcased artifacts from the space agency’s collection, including a replica of Johnson’s desk from the mission control room on the day of the moon landing. Johnson was one of the mathematicians who helped guide the mission and the largest African-American woman to work at NASA at the time.⁠

In a time when women and African Americans were often excluded from finding jobs in science, Johnson’s achievements helped pave the way for the next generation of scientists and mathematicians. ⁠
