Malcolm X was a polarizing and highly influential civil rights leader, minister, and human rights activist.  He was born in Omaha, Nebraska - but he moved to Lansing Michigan after the Ku Klux Klan made threats against his family. ⁠

Malcolm's early life was more than challenging.  In 1931 his father was murdered by a White supremacist group.  At the age of 6, he was placed into foster care after his grieving mother was committed to a mental health institution.  During his adolescent and young years, he began to get into trouble with the law, but his path changed for the better when he began to follow the Nation of Islam. ⁠

Inspired by their promotion of Black empowerment and shared ideals of freedom, Malcolm X grew with his faith, and eventually embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca and changed his name to el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. ⁠

Before his untimely assassination, Malcolm X was able to make a great deal of social impact.  He spoke passionately, invigorating those seeking hope under the veil of segregation.  Malcolm constantly preached the ideals of Black autonomy and independence.  He stressed the importance of education in the advancement of society.  Lastly, he taught others to use their adverse experiences as lessons that they could use to better themselves.⁠
