William Edward Burghard Du Bois was an American author, sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist.  Known as a leading intellectual in his era, Du Bois was the first African American in history to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University.  He was a founding member of the NAACP, and eventually the director of the organization's publicity and research - starting "The Crisis", the NAACP's official journal.⁠
