If you haven't read David Epstein's book "Range", it is a great read and also incredibly informative. He notes the numerous studies, done in a variety of sports, that show late specialization is the way to go in nearly all sports. Specializing early can lead to burnout, injury, lack of athletic adaptability, and the inability to creatively manipulate the game as the game's speed, tactics, and strategies change.
