Herman Alston had an immeasurable impact at the Jersey Shore Basketball League. Beyond his ability and accolades, his selection to the 55th Anniversary Team represents a message within the game of basketball that you can come from any level of college basketball and succeed as a professional. When "Weapon H" came into the league from Kean University, he was initially overlooked by the fans among the many bigger name players from the Division 1 and NBA levels. Between the lines on the court, it never mattered what level of basketball he came from. He would put up big time performances and lead his team to many victories against teams full of NBA and Division 1 players.

It did not take long for Herman to earn the respect of his peers including Anthony Mason who not only believed he was one of the top players at the JSBL, but that he deserved a legitimate shot in the NBA (going as far to tell that to an Asbury Park Press reporter in the 1990's).

The JSBL offers an opportunity for lower level (D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO) players to compete and prove themselves against professional and D1 players. To any lower level college players reading this, if you are fortunate enough to have an opportunity to showcase your game in this setting you should never miss that opportunity!

Herm was kind enough to not want to hold up the banquet with a long speech so he was very brief in his time at the podium, but the message that his story sends to young players is far louder than any words that could have been said at the podium.
Thank you for coming, Herman Alston. The league is forever grateful for the impact you had!

Transcript (in the gym)
"Out of alphabetical order is the all-time leading scorer at Kean University who was the NJAC Player of the Year in 1991 and a Kean Hall of Famer. He would play nearly 20 years of professional basketball both in the USBL and overseas. A four-time JSBL champion, two-time playoff MVP, and 5-time All-JSBL Selection, Herman Alston."
