We're back with another #NewTarHeelTuesday! Today we're featuring Payton Salmonson, a jazz musician who graduated from Holly Springs High School. 🎷

Q: What inspired you to choose Carolina?

I chose Carolina because of its exciting community, beautiful campus and facilities, and my interest in the many opportunities available both within Chapel Hill and across the Triangle area.

Q: What's the most rewarding thing about being a musician? What's the hardest?

I find the collaboration and community that comes with the creation of music to be the most rewarding thing about the art, especially in jazz. Exploring music alongside my peers is an incredibly exciting process. The greatest challenge for me is the individual side of musicianship. The constant pursuit of improvement can sometimes feel tiring or discouraging when results aren’t immediately clear.

Q: What are you most excited to do when you get to campus?

I’m incredibly excited to explore the ensemble opportunities in the Department of Music, and to be fully immersed in the Tar Heel community!

Q: What's the coolest thing you'll be bringing to your dorm?

My coffee setup is definitely the coolest thing coming to campus with me. I’ve been exploring coffee as a hobby for a few years, and I’m excited to create a new space in my dorm for my routine!
