⚠️ THIS POST IS ABOUT PERIODS! ⚠️
If you dont have a period and don’t know anyone who does, then you wont care about this topic and should just keep scrolling!
If you want to hear someone’s story about choosing which IUD to get, you’re in the right place!
I wrote aaaall about this for my newsletter that went out this morning, and you can read the article I wrote about my IUD journey on my website, www.ColleenQuigley.org

Here’s the main points:
1. I don’t want to get pregnant right now.
2. I want to get a natural period so that I can use that as a tool to check in with myself every month as a sign that my body is getting enough fuel to support the many activities I ask it to do. 🏃🏼‍♀️ 🚴🏻 🏊🏻‍♀️ Many contraceptives use hormones that either cause you to stop having a period or cause you to have one every month, but either way the period is no longer a signal that you can rely on. For me this is a big deal, so I definitely wanted non-hormonal contraception.
3. That doesn’t leave a lot of options right now! I got the copper IUD (Paragard) that is over 99% effective and doesn’t use hormones.
4. The insertion process was WAY more painful than I expected, so heads up for that!!!
5. My period was heavier and I had bad cramping for 3-4 months after insertion. I wasn’t too worried about this because I knew I could get it removed if those symptoms persisted, but it was NOT fun- no sugarcoating that part!
6. It’s been over a year now and my periods have largely gone back to normal as far as I can tell. And I’m not pregnant! So I’d say it’s a win win!

Other resources: @drstacysims has a great article about birth control on her website and points to a few different scientific studies about women athletes using hormonal birth control. I’d highly recommend doing your research before making such a personal and important decision about your healthcare.

I’m certainly no medical professional but I’m happy to share my story and answer any questions that I can about my own experience. I’m an open book, ask away in the comments! Also feel free to leave comments about your own BC story. I’d be curious to know and I’m sure others would too! 👇🏻
