Today is the prelims of the women’s steeplechase at the Olympics Games Tokyo 2020. I really thought I would be racing today and earning a spot in the final. I spent the last 5 years imagining myself doing that. For some reason, it wasn’t meant to be. I still don’t know why that is, but I’m probably too close to it to really understand right now.
A lot of people have said something to me about how these Olympics aren’t even real, they are the “Covid Olympics,” and I’m not missing much.
I know these people are probably just trying to make me feel better, but honestly that sentiment really pisses me off.
The Olympics are the Olympics. And I sincerely hope that the athletes competing in Tokyo don’t feel any kind of asterisk next to a performance that they’ve worked a lifetime for.
Fans or no fans, opening ceremonies or not, this is the friggin Olympics and it’s the pinnacle of track and field. And I wish I was there. Simple as that.
You can’t want something so bad and work your ass off to achieve it and then when you fall short turn around and act like it’s no big deal, you didn’t want it anyway. That’s a pathetic way to handle failure and I refuse to succumb to that.
This is a loss for me, and I’m feeling it. But I’m managing and I’m coping as best as I can. I know I’m resilient as f*#% and I will get through this and get back to that level of competition again.
As drmondo says, “the only way to it is through it.”
