I am really proud of Team USA Today.
From the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee: “Team USA athletes will not be sanctioned by the USOPC for peacefully and respectfully demonstrating in support of racial and social justice for all human beings.”
The first thing I think about is what Dr. John Carlos, Dr. Tommy Smith, Race Imboden, and Gwen Berry (my own USA Track and Field sister) went through when then decided to peacefully protest on the podium in the name of racial and social justice. It is said that those who pave the way and create change don’t always get to see the fruits of their labor. I can imagine this feels good but also frustrating for those who suffered sanctions as a result of their protests. While all 4 of these athletes suffered consequences for their actions, I am so glad they are able to see the direct results of their bravery. We wouldn’t be here today without them. Thank you.
There’s still work to do, and the USOPC has committed to work with the IOC and IOPC to amend Rule 50 and Section 2.2.
I have felt honored to be part of the conversations that the Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice have been having and am proud of the way the process has felt thorough, transparent, and very open to athlete voices and concerns. While these issues have been made to seem political, the council has been clear that human rights are NOT political and divisive demonstrations will not be allowed.
There’s always more work to be done, but progress and steps in the right direction feel good and I’m grateful to the committee members, athletes, staff, the USOPC and its leaders for helping make this step possible.
It’s good to know that if I or any USA athlete feels called to use our time in the limelight to peacefully protest for racial and social justice that we will be completely supported by Team USA.
