Today is World Mental Health Day! 🧠 Which is perfect because last night I recorded a podcast with voiceinsport all about my mental health journey. To prepare, I have been reflecting on how far I’ve come with my mental health and thinking about what I would tell my younger self (and other young athletes) about what I’ve learned.
First off, I never thought twice (or even once) about my mental game when I was in high school or college. Bad day? Definitely a physical problem only, mindset had nothing to do with it...
It wasn’t until 2017 that I started a practice of meditation and opened my mind up to the power of mental strength for an athlete. So it’s never to late to start valuing your mental health!
If you’re ready to start exploring, my advice is start small.
1. Meditate with an app like headspace or calm guiding you along the way.
2. Journal about your thoughts and feelings- getting it all out on paper can be extremely therapeutic. Need a journal prompt? DM me and I’ll send you a couple to get you started.
3. Find a therapist when you’re ready!
🧘🏼‍♀️
In the past year, I’ve amped up my mental health game a ton by working with a mental coach, thedrmondo, and it’s the best thing I’ve done for myself as a human and as an athlete in a long time.
On #mentalhealthday, I want you to know that everyone has their ups and downs, myself included. Sometimes I feel like the first picture, goofy/happy, and sometimes I feel like the second picture, angry/sad. Both of them are me, both of them are valid.
Most of us spend so much time working on our physical bodies by working out and recovering, but neglect the work on our mind. Whether it’s meditation, journaling, talking to someone, or all of the above, don’t forget to do whatever you need to do to take care of your mind. 🧠
And if you’re a female athlete, check out what my friends at voiceinsport are doing and look out for that podcast!
