Another frame from Wantagh last summer - the scans from that summer have gotten me to the point where I've really started to love Portra 400. When I first began shooting it, I was shooting it using some tips from some other photographers and overexposing it 1-2 stops always. It was cool to have the shadows have so much detail while still keeping the highlights in tact. But, the overall contrast, plus some super strange color shifts, heavily in the green/yellow direction. Not cool. So I gave up on the stock for a while and grabbed a few rolls before Warped last summer and decided to work it in with my massive stock of Tri-X. Instead of exposing it like everyone was suggesting to online, I shot it essentially at box speed (400) after asking a couple of other photographers shooting the stock and getting results I loved. Every last one said they were either shooting at 400, 320, or exposing normally and pushing it a stop. 320 wound up being exactly the look I was after, and matches the 1/3 stop shift I use on pretty much all films. It gives just a bit more shadow detail, while keeping most if not all of the contrast, and minimizing odd color shifts.

So yeah, there's that, and here's a frame from last summer, shot on Portra 400 through my Pentax. Love this combo, Tri-X, Portra 400 and 800 are my go to film stocks. All. Damn. Day.
