Numbers rule the universe. I have this quote hanging in my classroom. And it's kind of true. I guess. I mean, I am a math teacher -- I have to say these things. Or do I? To be honest, I have a love hate relationship with numbers. I love math, I love statistics, analytics, tracking -- but I also hate it. I also think that over-quantification of life is really damaging. ⁣

You see, when you measure something -- it creates a ranking. Which is sometimes okay, but a lot of times not helpful. Ranking leads to comparison. It shows me how I am in comparison to someone else -- but I am very different than someone else. You are very different than someone else. ⁣
⁣
Even in school, honestly. The intangibles are what are important to me. What I want to teach. I don't care if there's a way to measure them -- I know I'm teaching them. That's what matters. ⁣

I got a beautiful message from a former student yesterday. This happens occasionally. Someone I haven't seen in 5+ years. Who is now an adult. Pursuing a beautiful life on their own. And they thanked me. After all this time. Remembered me. After all this time. And it wasn't measured. It wasn't on my final eval. My rubric. Didn't show up in her GPA, PSAT score, PARCC ranking or rubrics. ⁣

Because it isn't all about what you can measure. And measurement doesn't always make something improve. Numbers are a valuable tool -- but what you can't represent with them is more important. Feelings. Love. Empathy. Compassion. Care. Let's aim to increase those. You'll know it when you see it. When you feel it.
