Last Tuesday of the school year. My room is in boxes (moving rooms), my walls are bare (boring), and my dress is linen and comfy (boring) because, you guys, I am tired. Of finals and grading and packing and meetings and checklists and summer school planning (yikes) and saying goodbye to kids, coworkers, and routine.

There’s this thing you learn about when you become a teacher — the “phases of a first year teachers attitudes toward teaching” — meant for the first year, but I’ve found it applicable for any number. .
.
First the anticipation phase: the romanticized version of teaching you have in your head. The excitement and anxiety that you feel. .
.
Then comes survival: quickly after the year starts and you realize that no, you are not prepared/invincible/inspiring/the modern day Michelle Pfieffer in Dangerous Minds. .
.
Next up, around the holidays, it gets really exciting: the disillusionment phase. Everyone is sick, misbehaving, you leave your house in the dark, get home in the dark — everything is dark. It’s “the dip” as Seth godin would say — do you keep going or quit? Lots quit. .
.
You soldier on to the next phase: rejuvenation. You’ve had a break, spring is coming — there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. You can actually do things after work and not immediately fall asleep on the couch.

Then before you know it, we’re here: the reflection phase. You reflect on what worked. What didn’t. Changes you’ll make next year. And leads right in to the anticipation phase

There’s something special about the phases. The blank slate of a new year, each year. The chance to change. To make a difference. Try something new. But you don’t have to be a teacher. Or wait until August. Embrace the changes. Anticipate them. Enjoy them. #jessdaytuesday
