As my 9th year of teaching is coming to a close (7 days to freedom!) I’ve been doing some reflecting. I always think it’s so strange that I’m a teacher. I didn’t go to school for education or ever want to be one, until like 3 months before I became one.

I didn’t really like school until college. I was the annoying kid who questioned the purpose of everything. I quit school in 5th grade (yeah really) then again in 9th. I came home and told my parents I was wasting all my time with boring busywork and two separate study halls and my goodness, parents how could you allow me to be brutalized like this?! Haha.. so I found a correspondence school and graduated at 15.

I never went to prom. Didn’t take AP classes. Didn’t fit the mold of what I’m pushing every day to my students. I refused to do things I didn’t want to do because I didn’t see the value in them.
.

And somehow it worked for me. I’m successful. Intelligent. Well educated. But I’m not so naive to think that would be true for anyone. I’m just idealistic enough to think I can change a kids experience at school. .
.
So, if I’ve achieved anything this — or any year really — I hope its connection. I hope a kid wants to come to school to see me. Wants to learn math if only to make me happy. Wants to stay in school because in some part I’ve helped to make it less boring. It’s a lofty goal, but I’m up for it.
