I worked for a couple years part time as an interviewer for a teaching program. Watching, recording, questioning, and rating second career high achieving professionals with an idealistic streak over an 8 hour day to either recommend them to the program as a coachable teacher or... not.

The rubric had several categories, but the one weighted highest was "the PR score" or Personal Responsibility. When faced with hypotheticals during a one on one like a first day of school with no books, no paper, pencils, and ceiling tiles falling off the ceiling — what do you do? Did they talk about the failure of others and how they would report the inequities or did they talk about what they would do? What they had control over. .
. 
Honestly, (and unfortunately) the majority of candidates placed the responsibility on others. It’s like those two type of people memes — are you active or passive. Take responsibility or not. And I get it. Believe me, after 10 years in education I understand that these things are at the core really (probably completely) other people's fault. But how does that change anything? How does that make this better? Make your day better? .

What I learned through was that it doesn't matter who's "fault" it was — what mattered was who tried to make it better. Once you shift the responsibility to someone else they just do the same. Nothing is solved. Everyone suffers. The only positive solution is to work the PR and do something. It doesn't matter if it's your problem. If you believe in it you work to change it. .

Its like I tell the kids in my class -- it doesn't matter if the paper/pencil/gum/Kleenex/wrapper/water bottle/slime/cheez it on the floor under your desk is yours. We are a team. We work better in a clean space. We work together. So we take responsibility and be the bigger person. We throw away the paper/pencil/gum/Kleenex/wrapper/water bottle/slime/cheez it and thank you sweet angel child for being a responsible classroom community member. .

Because it's no one and everyone's fault. Everything is. Instead of taking the time to argue one side or the other -- just take responsibility. Do what you can with what you have. #jessdaytuesday
