## Caption

The ice must flow 🪱

Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus shines bright in this image captured by our Cassini spacecraft as it transited past the moon from a distance of around 112,100 kilometers (69,700 miles). Enceladus is the most reflective world in the solar system, with a water-ice surface that averages temperatures around -330ºF (-201ºC).

Beneath the icy surface lies a vast ocean of salty water, which sprays jets of icy particles between the moon’s cracks that make up one of Saturn’s iconic rings. With hydrothermal vents, a salt ocean, and hydrocarbons, Enceladus has reshaped our understanding and search for where life may exist in our solar system and universe.

Image description: Enceladus’ half-lit white surface starkly contrasts the blackness of space. Cracks and bumps meander across the surface in shades of blue and white.

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute

#NASA #Space #SolarSystem #Enceladus #Saturn #Ice #Icy
