Meet Meredith Sorensen meredithdarcie, a senior cross country and track & field athlete for the University of Houston.  Meredith posted a Round 1 time of 11:09 for 2 miles before taking two tries at the Round 2 (1 mile) distance.  After initially running a 5:13, a time that appeared to be on the cusp of advancing, she tried again going 5:03 which comfortably sent her to Round 3!

“Beat the Heat has been a great way to cope with the delay of my final collegiate track season (I will be a COVID super senior). This series has prompted me to reflect on why I like to race and why I would be crazy enough to brave a Houston summer to chase fast times. But the best part is it has connected me with some amazing women from the Houston running community. “

On why she ran the mile a second time: 
“I wasn’t satisfied with my first attempt at the mile. I didn’t like the feeling that my initial time may or may not have gotten me into the next round, and I knew I was capable of more. I wanted to get in decisively so that come time for the 5k (not my strongest suit) I would be reassured that I belonged in the competition. I like how there are multiple chances at each distance in case you have a bad day.”
