“What defines a city? Its size, its population, its landmarks? Maybe it’s better to find something, anything, that highlights a city’s spirit. Its beauty. Its heart. Let me tell you how to define MY city. The skyline is endless, the possibilities are infinite. The action is fierce and nonstop, with a symphony of diversity that has a harmony entirely its own. It’s a place where you can at once disappear and be discovered. A town where private isolation is part of the public trust. Where at any moment, those who sometimes seem to work so hard to stay apart, suddenly, in an instant, come together.” When the city that doesn’t stop for anything, stops for this: a marathon.

I post this every year. I love the nycmarathon so much, and at a time when the world seems so crazy, so divisive, so scary, the marathon brings people together. Strangers run together, cheer for each other, encourage each other, and finish together. They become friends. The marathon — THIS marathon — is remarkable in that way.

To all the runners: Have the race of your dreams. Take it all in, run strong, let it hurt, and finish fast, furious, and smiling. To the spectators: Cheer for EVERYONE! Not just YOUR runner. And to the volunteers and nyrr staff: Thank you. I’m not running this year — I’ll be snuggling on the couch with Annie, teaching her about all the strong women on the TV screen — but am still giddy with excitement over this race.
