At 3:40 a.m. on August 31, 1888, a man discovered the body of Mary Ann Nichols in the Whitechapel district of London’s East End. She was brutally murdered and mutilated by an unknown assailant. There would be four more horrific killings in the area over the next few months, but there were few clues left behind to aid investigators. The killer — later known as Jack the Ripper — was never brought to justice. To this day, he remains one of the most infamous serial killers in history. ⁠
