Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, and novelist. He is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, the intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, art, fashion literature, and politics in Harlem, New York during the 1920s and 1930s. Perhaps his most notable work, Harlem — which starts with the line “What happens to a dream deferred?” digs into the dichotomy of the idea of the American dream juxtaposed with the reality of being in a marginalized community. ⁠⁠
