‘Desmarque’ is a Spanish term essentially meaning “the ability to lose your defender/create space”

Nothing revolutionary about it, but it is something that is simply not taught as a concept or skill in this country.

Most will throw it out to their players as a quick suggestion, but not nurture it as a habit for them to have in their game automatically. In other words, you’ll see it once or twice sporadically, but not as an autonomous thought/principle in their game.

And therein lies the issue with most principles in football. As a player and coach, don’t assume skimming over a topic will solidify it into a player’s game. Respect the process of teaching and don’t just throw out regurgitations expecting them to become habits.

This exercise for example, is not complex at all. The exercise is a tool. What you emphasize to your players creates the learning (and retention) process.

1v1+1 (2nd ‘attacker’ only has two touches and must stay on receiving line at the top of first box):

Emphasis on:

• Losing your defender and creating space to receive the ball.
• Understanding where the space is that you can exploit.
• 2nd movement to get open again after you’ve found your teammate on the next line.
• Double movements to clear space you want to go into when the defender begins anticipating.

Huge fan of this exercise because football, as a whole, boils down to individual duals.

Though not perfect here, the constant repetition of these situations begins to nurture habit and creativity in creating space. It installs automatic thoughts over time to not just mindlessly roam to the ball, but to appreciate the space and get open when the time is right.
