Interpretation of space.

Passing and receiving pattern as a warm up with the principles of:

• Receiving across body
• Checking shoulders

Then, a 1v1 progression of the warm up.

Video 1: Warm Up - “Ideal situation” - Clean reception, checking shoulders, able to open body shape and receive facing forward before passing.

Video 2: Warm up - “Baiting situation” - Football is not black and white, there are going to be times where you scan too late or forget to open your body. There are also times when you purposely receive the ball “incorrectly”. Here we are working on purposely baiting pressure by receiving with a closed body shape, and then using a turn to lose our defender and go forward.

Video 3: Progression - 1v1 with half turn - With a player on our back we continue to pass and circulate the ball, but when we sense enough space to receive (different for every player) we can go 1v1 after receiving the ball on our back foot.

Video 4: Progression - 1v1 with deceptive turn - We circulate the ball keeping our body shaped closed. This triggers a pressing cue for the defender to close us down, then we use their momentum against them and use a turn to go by them and put ourselves into a 1v1 situation.

There are little, if any, “universals” in football. It is not black and white. The game is constantly changing and fluctuating. Having an idea of what ‘should’ be done in situations is great, but you MUST also have the awareness and ability to improvise if the picture changes.
