Student Spotlight: Samantha Anyim ’19 is conducting with Dr. Jen Wright an ambitious Bachelor’s Essay research project investigating negative attitudes based on intersectionality of minority group identity markers (e.g., gender, race, sexual orientation, religion). Samantha created and randomly assigned participants to read scenarios combining identity markers (e.g., an African male who identifies as homosexual) and display a high, moderate, or low intersectionality of identity. Samantha was awarded a competitive Major Academic Year Support grant from URCA to support her research for the 2018-2019 academic year. She will present her findings at the PSYC department’s annual Student Awards and Research Day. Samantha notes that the research, “has personal relevance for me as I describe myself using multiple minority identity markers. I have come to realize that these personal identity markers, which I once viewed as a social hindrance, have formed me into the open-minded individual that so desperately yearns for reconciliation with the racial and social injustices that have become so heavily interlaced within our society. As a result, I hope that the results from my study will lend more insight and possibly solutions for bridging the racial and social gap that is so vast in our society.”
While at CofC, Samantha also volunteered through the Honors College partnered program, Metanoia, as a tutor in an after-school program for students from low SES backgrounds. She participated in and led service opportunities in Charleston as the Service Co-Chair for Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national pre-medical honors society. Samantha is currently volunteering with the project housing on Beufain Street, where she tutors an assigned student as part of an after-school program for students from low SES backgrounds. She says, “The volunteer work that I have done throughout my college career has been substantial and has helped me to understand marginalized communities.”
