Think it’s time to upgrade your $20 Target mat to something that’ll take your practice to the next level? We’ve got some things to consider:

1. A yoga mat is a personal thing – from how it feels under your feet to how it smells when you’re in downward dog. Consider your options, but at the end of the day choose what’s right for you.

2. Invest in durability – trust us, you’ll get more emotionally attached to your mat than you’d think, so you’ll want something you can keep for 2, 3 – even 5 years. Materials like natural rubber are great for a long-term choice, and they cost anywhere from $65-$100 depending on the brand.

3. You’ll need a good grip – nothing ruins a good crow post like your slippery hands moving all over the mat… plunging you face down on the floor.  Go for a material that is porous enough to absorb sweat and that’s thick enough to help you plant your feet a little more solidly (thereby improving your posture.) High-quality PVS mats are great for this.

4. Environmental impact – yoga teaches us to respect our environment, so shouldn’t that extend to the materials in our mats? Chemically-composed mats like those made from synthetic rubber do a lot of damage to the environment, whereas natural materials like juke use few pesticides and support local agricultural communities.
