Here’s what Junior, Noha, is up to this summer!

Where are you working?
This summer I’m working as a treatment program specialist at the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program. The place that I work is a respite for homeless people, meaning it’s a hospital with 24/7 nursing staff that take care of people after they have had surgeries/been discharged from an emergency department. Many of our patients have substance use disorders and are seeking treatment programs. We work on their referrals to make sure they are discharged to the treatment program that best fits their recovery needs and that they have the support necessary to transition to a treatment program.

Did you use Career Services to find this internship?
I am doing this internship through the Jim P. Manzi Fellowship offered through Colgate’s Career Services. This is a fellowship founded by a alum intended to help students fund unpaid internships working for Boston non-profits. As part of the fellowship, I am provided free housing in Boston and a stipend to help with groceries and transportation costs. I have also been connected with several alumni in the area working in healthcare access.

What’s something unexpected you’ve learned?
Something unexpected that I realized from this internship is how much I enjoy working with the homeless population and specifically those with substance use disorders. I have bonded with several patients and enjoy hearing about their success stories and even those who did not succeed because they are still trying to recover - it’s really inspiring seeing how strong so many of these patients are. Despite not getting paid, I find myself staying late somedays just to chat with patients and hear more about their experiences. The position has also helped me really build my networking skills and learn more about my career interests which helps me solidify my passions/extracurriculars at Colgate and what I want to use my Colgate education for. I also didn’t expect to pet a therapy alpaca and it was a very pleasant surprise🥸 #gogate #internshipspotlight
