Breaking Down the Baseball Start

Mason LaPlante is arguably our fastest athlete at #DSTnorth, and consistently runs his 10yd starts in the 1.42-1.46 second range. After a slow start to the day, this post breaks down the adjustments that were made to improve this 1.48 second start to the 1.44 second start

Picture 1: Stance
Mason’s faster start shows him setup with a wider and slightly more open stance, which lowers his center of mass and makes it easier for his back hip and leg to clear forward on his first move

Picture 2: Plyo Step & Shin Angle
On his faster sprint, Mason strikes farther behind the start line, causing his center of mass to be farther in front of his base of support, making it easier to generate forward momentum. He also has a more positive shin angle, which puts him in a more advantageous position to generate horizontal force into the ground

Picture 3: Triple Extension & Forward Lean
This picture shows the significant increase in extension that Mason achieves on the first step of his faster sprint. He also has more a forward lean on his faster start, which again puts him in a better position to produce horizontal force

In the video, you can also see the difference in extension that Mason achieves. The videos are synced on his first move, allowing you to see how much longer Mason extends through his lower half on that first step

Picture 5: First Step Distance
The final picture shows the difference in distance that Mason covers off the line on that first step

Mason LaPlante (yalebaseball) has made tremendous progress since he started training with us in March. Early on in his training he ran a blistering 1.40 second 10yd start, and since then he has gained nearly 15 lbs and still posted an impressive 1.41 second 10yd start just a couple weeks ago! Being able to maintain that level of speed while adding on 15 solid lbs is a testament to the hard work that Mason has put into his training this spring and summer!
