Patients at Connecticut Children’s do not go alone in their battle against childhood illness; at HuskyTHON, we recognize that siblings, too, are a part of that fight. Today, we take a step #InTheirShoes to better understand their experience and perspective as an integral part of the patient process at Connecticut Children’s.

Emma was born with Crouzon syndrome, causing her skull to fuse too early in her development. She has endured three surgeries, and each time, her skull is opened up and expanded, allowing room for her brain to properly grow. Due to increased pressure in her head, Emma would experience seizures leading up to each surgery, which would typically resolve post-operation. More recently, however, the seizures have begun again. Emma remains on medication to keep all of this under control. Through all of this, her built-in best friend, Abigail, never left her side.

“My sister Emma is my best friend,” said Abigail. “Sometimes, it is hard for me because of her syndrome. On one of her first seizures… I started crying because I saw her and my parents getting into the ambulance. It was scary. After she had her surgery, she would not take her meds unless I cheered for her. If I was not there in person, I would FaceTime her.”

Siblings, the HuskyTHON community thanks you for the unwavering support you give to your family as we collectively fight for a world absent of pediatric illness. The experiences and perspectives of siblings can often be forgotten, but we hope that hearing a piece of Emma and Abigail’s story will help you to further develop your cause connection as you put yourself #InTheirShoes.

“Thank you to everyone for helping Connecticut Children’s!” -Abigail.
