Jeff Fischer aka "Fish" wasn't only my Manager, he was an inspiration, a rock, and a friend.
2 years ago, I received an email from Jeff stating that he was the manager for someone named Damian Warner, a Olympic Medalist. He mentioned that he saw my interview with the NHL Network and loved what I did. He added that he admired my story, and he sincerely wanted to help. I didn't have a manager at the time since I was afraid. I was afraid that naive me would be taken advantage of. All I wanted was to draw. Making money was secondary. So when others came prior to him offering the world, I easily refused. But, this was different. What Jeff didn't know was that his wife was a former professor of mine, that a few of his close friends were my high school teachers, and that Damian was one of my friends and former basketball teammates. These seemed like wild coincidences. I felt an immediate inspiration from Fish. Even though he was obviously successful in many facets of his life, he seemed like someone who genuinely wanted the best for others.
After a weekend of deliberation, my wife, Tray Cee and I sat down with him at his office and signed an agreement.
For 2 years, non-stop, Fish would advocate for us, fight for our presence, introduce us to so many other genuinely incredible people, walk me off cliffs, and share stories that brought laughter and hope to a scary and unknown world to me.
All Fish ever wanted was for me to be successful. When times were great, he brought me down a bit and found ways to push for better, and when times were low he never left my side. The months leading up to his passing he kept calling every monday at 10am, as he always did prior. Despite the extreme shortness of breath and my persistent request for him not to, he kept going over all the ways he was going to help me. Even 24 hours before he passed, he sent me a wonderful message that was STILL assuring ways I would be looked after. I have truly never met someone else like him.
All I want to do now is carry on the drive that he had for me to succeed. If I ever reach what he thought was my potential, I pray that I will be just like him.
