Drawing "A King's Reign"
Time lapse of the 133 hour process

I had the honour of being commissioned by the lakings to produce a drawing that highlighted dewyd8 playing 1000 career nhl games.  They gave me complete creative control so I took the opportunity to loosen the chains and put forth my most ambitious piece to date.

My goal was to celebrate Drew and his loyalty to LA.  Of course the main part of the drawing is my signature close up portraiture work.  It was important for me to capture focus, yet not make it too emotive as to take away from the other elements.  If you look closely you can see his teammates sitting on the bench.  The second focal point would be the "1000". I knew I wanted the number in the piece, however I didnt want it to be a block of text.  I chose to insert drawings of him over his years with the team and their different jerseys.  I had to flirt with the balance of legibility and likeness of Drew in each number.  Next was the background...being the naive type, I decided against a solid gradient background and instead did a faded, tonal, yet detailed drawing of him with the cup thinking it wouldnt take too long (I was very incorrect). This also gave me the opportunity to draw him with his teeth!  Possibly the most difficult part of this piece was the cityscape.  Not only fading it, I decided to blend and overlay it across several other elements in the drawing.  As the cherry on top I added in all of his various accomplishments over the years in a VERY light text.

Overall I am pleased with the result and happy I have found another way to push my limits further.
