For the Kittery-Portsmouth area, which has no formal art museum and relatively few venues to view contemporary art, buoygallery stands out as a beacon to those who are invested in experiencing (and exhibiting) visual art. When founder Al Mead opened the space in 2008, the idea was to create a gallery that focused on the work, and pushed back against the exclusivity that the art world can perpetuate. The resulting space, along with its most popular yearly exhibition ArtPM (which features work by over 300 artists every year), is shaped by a desire to let artwork speak for itself, while also being guided by the influence of the wider community.
