On Wednesday, March 24, protesters marched toward T. Don Hutto Residential Center to demand action from the Biden administration to shutter the center’s doors for good. Immigration advocacy groups like Mujeres Luchadoras and Grassroots Leadership have fought to close the detention center for at least 10 years. They claim the center, which detains women seeking asylum, harbors inhumane conditions including sexual abuse of detainees, inadequate food and medical care, and forced labor. Among the protesters were women who shared their experiences when they themselves were detained at the center. This comes at a time when thousands of asylum seekers, largely women and children, continue to cross the Mexico border into the U.S. Under a new presidential administration, some grassroots leaders like Maria Reza said she has hope that changes will come and the center will close. "The president ran his campaign promising to really create a humane pathway for all people coming to the United States," said Reza. "We want to put pressure on the Biden administration to actually follow through on his promise to give some dignity to all immigrants here living in the U.S." #texas #mujeresluchadoras #grassrootsleadership #immigration #usmexicoborder #protest 📸 brontewittpenn
