Last year Army veteran Imani Nembhard was pulled over by Williamson County sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Pisa for a missing front license plate while her two children were in the car. The incident escalated when Pisa asked Nembhard if she loved her children after he ran her information. When she quipped back if his parents loved him, Pisa asked her to step out of the vehicle, then wrestled her to the ground as her children watched. “I was embarrassed, humiliated in front of my children,” Nembhard said. She was charged with assault and resisting arrest but the charges were eventually dropped. Pisa resigned two days after the incident. The arrest prompted an investigation by the Texas Rangers and prosecutors. During the investigation Pisa said he thought he was going to receive a gift card to a steak house from his commander for using “good use of force.” On Oct. 15, Pisa was indicted by a grand jury for assault and official oppression in his handling of Nembhard. The incident has made lasting impacts on both she and her children. “Since that happened she hasn’t been the same,” Nembhard said about her oldest daughter Jurnii. “I saw a huge shift even in school.” Nembhard’s case is one of several incidents of excessive force used in recent years since Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody invited camera crews from reality television show “Live PD” to follow his department. Chody has since been indicted on felony charges with evidence tampering in the case of Javier Ambler, who died last year in deputies’ custody as “Live PD” camera filmed his final moments.
