"I've been in education for 27 years and I've never done anything like this in my life," said Principal Ginger Bordeau. "It's hard to prepare for something you've never done before." 

This week, Austin-area students are returning to the classroom for the first time since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic seven months ago. Students from Carpenter Hill Elementary School in Hays County returned this week to learn virtually in the classroom while most teachers taught from home. The district opened its doors to students with working parents who have no options for child care and provided support staff to monitor and assist the students as they navigate their education online. 

Nationwide school districts, teachers, parents and students continue to grapple with how to safely reopen campuses.
