Despite ongoing investigations into allegations of racism within the Austin Police Department that threatened to scuttle a police academy class scheduled for June, police leaders are planning to continue training new cadets as planned. The June academy would add dozens of new officers to a force which currently struggles with 180 vacancies. On Friday, the department commissioned 67 new officers, of whom 43 are white, 16 Hispanic, four black and four Asian American. Austin police Capt. Mark Spangler, who has directed the academy since 2016, said the department “absolutely” has to have the June class; adding it will take 24 to 30 months of classes to get the vacancy number close to zero.
