Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary since the Iconic Village Apartment fire that killed five people, including two of Zachary Sutterfield’s roommates in San Marcos, Texas. He was asleep on the couch when the fire broke out. It burned 70 percent of his body. The impact from jumping off the balcony crushed part of his skull causing a traumatic brain injury. Since the fire, Sutterfield, 21, has undergone 24 operations, with three major ones in the coming months to rebuild his hands, his skull and remove scars from the burns. And while the operations take their toll, it’s finding love for his body that is most challenging. “That’s one of the most difficult things with me is being able to look in the mirror and be comfortable in my new skin,” Sutterfield said. “To love myself again.” Investigators still have not found the person responsible for the fire, which was believed to be an arson.
