Unnecessarily long post warning: I did a set of “Unconventional Sports Team Logos” like four years ago (which is weird to say because it feels like 10... and looks like it..) and thought it would be fun to redo some of them.

After my year with the Chiefs was over I started working at a more typical marketing agency and I remember being so burnt out when I got home that I really wasn’t doing any design work outside of what I was doing for my job. And the work I was doing was for very niche industries I wasn’t really interested in and didn’t really want in my portfolio. So I forced myself to sit down and make this set of mascot logos. And looking back they’re not great 😂 but I had fun doing them. I’ve always loved combining humor and design and making mascot logos out of these weird animals was enjoyable for me.

I had no intention of doing anything with these logos, it was purely for fun. Two months later I got an email from someone at Under Armour saying they had seen my logos and wanted me to fly down for an interview. Long story somewhat short, I don’t think I was very good at pretending like I knew what the hell I was doing at the time and did not get the job but it was a great experience and a good confidence booster. And it didn’t come from any work I was doing at the time but from something I did for fun in my free time. 

That’s why whenever design students or old professors ask me for advice to give I say to always try to make time for work that you enjoy doing. Even if it’s not for anything, just think of a cool concept or an industry you want to work in and make something that interests you. Your best work usually comes when you’re enjoying what you’re doing and you never know who’s going to stumble across your work.

Also, I realize this went from being a Llama to an Alpaca but I met some cute alpacas in Scotland and I’ve decided they’re better so don’t @ me...
