#WomensHistoryMonth: Nikea Gamby-Turner has starred in several stage plays and award-winning sketch groups. She has also worked with several primetime television shows, including Abbott Elementary, where she can currently be seen as Shanae, Mildred Lindsey in Dahmer, and most recently made a surprise reveal starring in a Super Bowl LVII commercial. 

Raised in Los Angeles, Gamby-Turner dreamed of becoming an entertainer from her early memories of participating in modeling opportunities and gospel musicals at church. The daughter of a single mother raising two children, Gamby-Turner found identity and peace through performance and vowed to water her passion consistently.

While an undergraduate mass communication major at JSU, she discovered the world of drama. She went on to star in several school plays and hosted her own show on the local television channel, W23BC titled “Entertainment Spotlight” where she would interview celebrities visiting Jackson area. She also had a segment on the local news called “Weekend Preview," where she highlighted upcoming local festivities in the Jackson area.

Upon graduating, Gamby-Turner returned home preparing for the next chapter of life after receiving several nudges of encouragement to pursue standup comedy as her next venture. She graced the stage of several prominent Los Angeles comedy clubs, including Mavericks Flats, Comedy Store, The Improv, and the Ha Ha Cafe.

While in the season of expanding her artistic palette, Gamby-Turner was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. She left classes and the world of acting for three years to reclaim her health. Gamby-Turner overcame cancer through sustained faith and mental fortitude, gaining a new zeal for life.

Currently, she is 18 years breast cancer free and advocates for breast cancer awareness while continuing to live out her wildest dreams.
