This November, you don’t want to miss the 50th anniversary of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival. In 1973, Margaret Walker invited the top Black women writers to Jackson State to celebrate the bicentennial of the first published volume of poetry by an African American author: Phillis Wheatley’s “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral.” Lucille Clifton, Nikki Giovanni, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Sonia Sanchez, and Alice Walker were a few of the notable people who participated in the wonderful conversations all those years ago.

Registration for the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival is now open to the public. Students can register for free! Registration closes on July 31, 2023. The link is in our bio.

Join us from November 1-4 for an unforgettable time at Jackson State University. Many of the participants from 1973 will return for this year’s festival hosted by JSU, including an entirely new generation of writers like Jesmyn Ward and Angie Thomas. The weekend will commemorate the legacy of Black women writers through intergenerational discussions.
