#PeopleofJSU: “Music is like another language that connects everybody. It’s its own world, especially where I’m from. Music is just the center of everything. It’s the way you celebrate life and death.

In Louisiana, we have this thing we do during funerals called ‘second line.’ The music starts off sad and slow. But at the end, for the celebration of life, it gets happier and dance-like. There were a lot of deaths in my family, but I feel like seeing that side of it – as a celebration and not always sad – really made me see the world in a different way. Now, I look at things more on the brighter side, on a happier note.

Right now, I’m student-teaching, and I can see that the kids really enjoy music because it’s a different way for them to express themselves outside of the home. They may come from an environment where there are bad things that you really don’t want to see at that age. So when I graduate, I want to continue to work in elementary schools where I can show kids how music can help them the way it helped me when I was younger.”
