#PeopleofJSU: “I came to the U.S. in the fall of 2019. Before I came, my English was more British than American because that was the way I was taught to speak. So I had to adapt to the American way of speaking. But I like to learn. In the next five years, I want to learn seven languages. I like to challenge myself. That’s something my mom instilled in me.

Growing up, it was just my mom and me. So you can imagine the responsibilities I had. She owns a restaurant, and that’s how I learned things like bookkeeping and accounting. I also learned how to cook and how to manage people. And she did a great job raising me. I wasn't always a straight-A student. I remember failing a semester, and my mom did something that I think I’m going to pass on to my kids. She started rewarding me for the little things I’d do. Even now, if I want something, like a PS5, she wants me to understand how much work she has to put in to provide it for me. Then, I have to put in the work in school to meet her halfway. She did a good job instilling in me the things she learned in life.

That love of learning has stuck with me. I graduated from high school at 15 and got admitted to college in Nigeria. But I was given a major that I didn’t want to pursue, and in Nigeria, you can’t switch majors. So I took a gap year from 2017 to 2018 and learned a lot of skills like blogging, SEO, email marketing, web design, and coding. Right now, I work on campus in the Center for Innovation. I also own a social media marketing agency. When I’m presented with a challenge, it’s stimulating for me because I enjoy critical thinking and creativity.

I'm working on combining the skills I’ve learned to make money off of them. I’m not the type of person to just be focused on one profession. I want to be able to do what I can do, do what I love, and have enough cash flow and wealth to be okay for myself, my future wife and kids, my mom, my friends, and to give to charity."
