For Black Music Month, we at WatchTheYard have teamed up with SonyMusicU to highlight HBCU Music Changemakers. Today we're highlighting 23-year-old publicist + Clark Atlanta University graduate Brandy Star Merriweather (MsHBCU).

Brandy is the Executive Administrative Assistant for Black Music Action Coalition, and Senior Publicist of BStarPR, her company, where she leads PR efforts for top Gen-Z influencers and brands like TikTok's #SavageChallenge creator Keara 'Queen Keke' Wilson, Digital Nas who produced on Kanye’s ‘DONDA’, Azriel, CollabCrib, YG Entertainment, Seth Francios, Kahlen Barry, and more.

⭕️ What HBCU do you represent?

CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY

⭕️ How did your HBCU experience prepare you for where you are in your career today?

My experience humbled me. Showed me just how great my peers are, and how when our minds are powered together what Genius looks like. After growing up, and being the only African-American girl at many of my schools and classes; the HBCU experience showed me valuable pieces of myself and culture that I didn't know. My HBCU experience has given me a network of brothers and sisters beyond my wildest dream. The Atlanta University Center's professors and mentors have provided me with a special swag, corporate confidence, and keen visibility that I utilize in my career daily.

⭕️ What advice would you have for students who want to follow in your footsteps in regards to working in or adjacent to the music industry?
Chile, do it. Do the research, do the unpaid internship (as long as you can), do the cold emailing, do the planning sessions with your friends who you see have potential, do the late nights, do the early mornings, do the college programs, do the therapy sessions, do the bible study, and do the freaking most you can do learn because it pays off. Literally.

⭕️ What inspires you?

The Day. Knowing that time stops for no one. My family has been my biggest support team ensuring I am productive despite my easy days. I am inspired knowing I am making an impact. Knowing my work today will directly positively impact me and others is what keeps me inspired.

Head over to SonyMusicU for everything college + music!
