Implicit biases and prejudices play a significant role in disparities for outcomes for mental health issues in minority youth. For youth, implicit bias within the school system can often result in misdiagnoses, perceiving students of color as more violent or suspicious. As a result, minorities are more likely to end up in the juvenile justice system due to harsher disciplinary actions, such as suspension or expulsion (via: apa.org).
.
#BIPOCMentalHealthAwarenessMonth was created to help shine a light on some of the challenges that Black, Indigenous and People of Color face with regard to mental health. To learn more about disparities in mental health for BIPOC, as well as the impact implicit bias has on mental health outcomes for BIPOC, visit nhanational.org or nami.org.

Thielen Foundation aims to create programs that will equip and empower kids to reach their full potential in life. Addressing the mental health challenges many of today’s youth face, Thielen Foundation partners with the Behavioral Health Unit at umnchildrens to share stories of hope and strength with families as well as offer wellness tools to incorporate into their lives, such as journals and yoga.
