July is BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) Mental Health Awareness Month. In 2008, the US House of Representatives posthumously declared July Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, an author, journalist, and activist who cofounded NAMI Urban Los Angeles.
.
#BIPOCMentalHealthMonth aims to bring awareness to the unique challenges Black, Indigenous, and People of Color face with regards to mental health, such as:
1. Depression among Black youth is 30% higher than others in their age group.
2. People of color face additional cultural and structural barriers to accessing mental health care.
3. BIPOC are at increased risk for meeting the criteria of PTSD due to racial trauma, among other issues.
.
For more information and resources, including hotlines and specific resources for BIPOC, please visit mhanational.org/july or nami.org.
.
Thielen Foundation aims to create programs that will equip and empower kids to reach their full potential in life. Addressing the mental health challenges many of today’s youth face, Thielen Foundation partners with the Behavioral Health Unit at umnchildrens to share stories of hope and strength with families as well as offer wellness tools to incorporate into their lives, such as journals and yoga.
