On Monday in Downtown Los Angeles, 
Black Lives Matter-L.A., The ACLU of Southern California, community members, and families affected by Los Angeles Sheriff’s department violence gathered outside of the Hall of Justice, demanding that the L.A. County Board of Supervisors create a way to remove an elected sheriff from office. In hopes of achieving more accountability and transparency from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s department the groups are asking for three things. 

1. “Creating a procedure to allow impeachment and removal of the sheriff by a four-fifths vote of the Board for serious violations of the public trust, including serious crimes, unconstitutional conduct, and abuse of power.” 
2. Reinforce the board's authority to create policy.
3. Establish a permanent, independent, and more robust civilian oversight of the LASD. 

L.A. country Sheriff candidate LT. Eric Strong announced his support of the Amendment, “Today I announced my support for a charter amendment that would create an impeachment and removal process for the office of #LACountysheriff Unlike the incumbent, I believe that no sheriff should oppose or resist accountability and oversight,” He said. While current Sheriff Alex Villanueva predictably disagreed, “Beware of coalitions masquerading as “reform“ groups. In reality, many are simply part of coordinated attacks on a Latino Sheriff” (In Oct 2020 the existing oversight community called on Villanueva to resign) he continued saying, “These efforts are in fact designed to further defund the LASD and protect the homeless industrial complex.“

Villanueva failed to note that his department recorded a $22.2 million surplus in 2021. Despite exceeding its budget for overtime by more than 50 million dollars.
