Before heading into this final day off before we start tech rehearsal for #LightsOutPL at peopleslight I had to take a minute to shout this man out. Born in #Harlem, #SammyDavisJr was a #Blackman, half #PuertoRican and #Jewish. If he were alive today he would be all up in these trenches!! He is quite possibly one of the greatest performers of all time and one of my absolute favorites. Sammy was an AMERICAN. While serving in the army his fellow soldiers beat him up repeatedly, broke his nose, and painted #NIGGER on his chest in white paint. He knew the only way he could get an ounce of respect was to become a star. He made it his mission. He said, "My talent was the weapon, the power, the way for me to fight. It was the one way I might hope to affect a man's thinking." He then said, "I have to be a star like another man has to breathe." Being a star in America was the only way Sammy felt like he would be able simulate the feeling of freedom and yet still he had AMERICA to deal with. He couldn't stay in the hotels he performed in and had to enter through the back door of venues he was headlining. And Sammy always loved America. He believed in America and her potential. He knew he had to be the change he wanted to see. If Sammy had accepted "the way things were" he never would have been able to breathe. Stepping into his shoes has been one of the most challenging tasks to date. And it couldn't be more on time. There's a great awakening happening and everyone, individually, has to reckon with themselves more than anything.  Sammy ALSO said, "You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear." I am thankful to patriciamcgregor and kingofbingo for trusting me with this work and pushing me further and further into my inner #SuperSayan. I am blessed to be performing opposite my bredrin dulehill as we tell the story of #NatKingCole wrestling with fire vs grace. I learn more and more everyday!! Come check us out.
